"Is my child ready for school?" It's the question that can keep parents awake at night, wondering if they're doing enough to prepare their little one for this huge milestone. After serving Castle Hill families since 1989, we deeply understand this mixture of excitement and worry - and recent international research has given us valuable insights into what truly supports children's school success.

The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study recently revealed something significant: there's a substantial gap between children who start school with foundational skills and those who don't - and this gap affects their learning for years to come.

What the Research Reveals About School Success

The study analysed 14,000 Australian students and revealed something important: the vast majority of children are starting school without crucial foundational skills. In fact, only 6% of students attended schools where most of their incoming classmates (more than 75%) had these essential abilities.

This means that if your child develops these skills before starting school, they'll have a significant advantage. Children who started kindergarten with these foundations scored much higher in Year 4 mathematics and science tests.

As researcher Dr Dan Cloney explains: "Learning is cumulative. What a student learns from age two to four is a really strong predictor of their learning in upper primary and senior high school."

This research highlights specific literacy and numeracy capabilities that, when developed appropriately, create lasting educational advantages.

The Foundation Skills Research Has Identified

The study highlighted these key areas that support school success:

Literacy Foundations

  • Recognising most letters of the alphabet
  • Reading some words and simple sentences
  • Writing letters and words beyond their own name
  • Understanding that symbols carry meaning

Numeracy Foundations

  • Counting to 100 or higher
  • Recognising written numbers from 1 to 10 and beyond
  • Writing numbers from 1 to 10
  • Performing simple addition and subtraction

Why These Skills Matter

The research showed that children with these foundations scored an average of 570 in Year 4 maths and 585 in science, placing them in the "high" achievement category. In contrast, children without these skills scored lower - 509 for maths and 539 for science.

Beyond Academic Skills: What Early Childhood Experts Know

While the research focuses on academic foundations, early childhood education recognises that school readiness encompasses much more:

Social and Emotional Development:

  • Managing emotions and expressing needs appropriately
  • Building friendships and showing empathy
  • Following routines and instructions
  • Developing resilience when facing challenges

Physical Development:

  • Fine motor skills needed for writing and detailed tasks
  • Gross motor skills for playground confidence and sports
  • Self-care abilities like managing belongings and personal needs

Learning Dispositions:

  • Curiosity about the world around them
  • Persistence when facing difficulties
  • Confidence to ask questions and seek help
  • Enjoyment of learning and discovery

How Our Learning for Life Approach Supports Development

At Kings Road Preschool, we focus on building these foundations through engaging, age-appropriate experiences:

Our Kangaroo Group (Pre-School Programme) includes:

  • Structured literacy experiences exploring letters, sounds, and early writing
  • Numeracy development through counting, patterns, and problem-solving activities
  • Social skills development through group activities and collaborative projects
  • Creative expression through art, music, and dramatic play

Our Three Rs Philosophy guides our approach:

  • Respect: Building the foundation for positive classroom behaviour and relationships
  • Responsibility: Developing independence children need for school routines
  • Resilience: Creating persistence and confidence when facing new challenges

Daily Programme Elements:

  • Group times focusing on listening skills and following instructions
  • Individual choice time allowing children to explore interests deeply
  • Outdoor play developing physical skills and risk assessment
  • Meal times practising social skills and healthy habits

What We Celebrate During Children's Time With Us

While children are part of our Kings Road family, we have the privilege of witnessing their remarkable growth across all areas:

  • Blossoming confidence as they express ideas and ask questions with enthusiasm
  • Growing ability to work both independently and collaboratively with friends
  • Developing fine motor skills through joyful art, writing, and hands-on exploration
  • Strengthening friendships and social skills through our inclusive, caring community
  • Building emotional resilience through our supportive Three Rs environment

We document these precious moments of growth and share them with families through learning stories and regular assessments, helping you see and celebrate your child's unique journey.

Supporting School Readiness at Home

Daily Opportunities for Learning:

  • Read together regularly, discussing stories and characters
  • Count and sort during everyday activities (setting the table, organising toys)
  • Encourage drawing, mark-making, and creative expression
  • Practice patience and problem-solving through puzzles and games

Building Confidence:

  • Celebrate effort and persistence over perfection
  • Encourage questions and curiosity
  • Create opportunities for age-appropriate independence
  • Model positive attitudes toward learning and challenges

Addressing Common Family Concerns

"My child isn't interested in letters or numbers yet."This is completely natural! Children develop at their own beautiful pace, and pushing academic pressure too early can actually harm their relationship with learning. Focus on making literacy and numeracy joyful through songs, stories, and play - just like we do in our daily programme.

"What if my child seems behind other children?"Every child is wonderfully unique in their development journey. Quality early childhood education meets children exactly where they are and celebrates their individual progress. Comparing children can create unnecessary stress for families when what we really want is to nurture each child's natural curiosity and confidence.

"How do I know if my child needs extra support?"If you notice ongoing challenges with communication, social interaction, or daily tasks, we encourage you to discuss these with your child's educators. Early support can make a tremendous difference, and we're here to work with you in understanding your child's needs.

Questions to Ask When Choosing Early Childhood Education

About Educational Philosophy:

  • How do you balance skill development with play-based learning?
  • What's your approach to supporting children who learn differently?
  • How do you communicate with families about their child's progress?

About School Readiness:

  • What specific experiences prepare children for the transition to school?
  • How do you build both academic foundations and social-emotional skills?
  • What documentation do you provide about children's learning and development?

About Individual Support:

  • How do you adapt your programme for children with different needs and interests?
  • What support do you provide for children who need extra help in specific areas?
  • How do you work with families to support learning at home?

Creating Confident, Happy Learners

The research confirms what early childhood educators have long understood: solid foundations in the early years create advantages that grow over time. However, these foundations must be built with love, respect, and genuine understanding of how young children learn best.

School readiness isn't about academic pressure or creating anxiety. It's about nurturing confident, curious children who approach learning with joy and wonder - children who know they're valued exactly as they are whilst being supported to grow into who they're becoming.

At Kings Road Preschool, our values-based care with educational excellence means we focus on the whole child. Through our Learning for Life approach, we create an inclusive community where every family feels welcomed and every child can thrive, regardless of their starting point or background.
